You might have noticed that Toronto’s art scene is buzzing with exciting exhibitions and art events this season. From small galleries to major fairs, there’s so much happening that it can be tough to keep everything on your social calendar. However, that doesn’t mean you should miss out! Whether you’re looking to start your art collection or simply want to soak in some creative inspiration, there are a few key art events in Toronto that you should definitely drop in on.

Luckily, with winter approaching, we’ll have more time to explore these indoor gems (and stay warm!). Below are some fantastic events I’ve come across while casually getting my steps in on Saturdays—so consider this your guide to must-see art events from mid-October to winter.

1. Art Toronto (October 26-29, 2024)

If you’re an art lover, Art Toronto is the big one you don’t want to miss. As the country’s largest contemporary and modern art fair, it brings together artists, collectors, and galleries from across Canada and around the world.

Whether you’re searching for a piece to add to your collection or just want to wander through and take in the diversity of artwork on display, this event will leave you inspired. Every time I go, I discover something new—whether it’s a bold new talent or a stunning work of art that stays with me long after I leave.

2. Nuit Blanche Extended Exhibits (Until October 21, 2024)

Various Locations

Even though, one of the most famous art events, the all-night Nuit Blanche has wrapped up, you still have time to check out some of its most striking installations. They’ll remain on display across the city until October 21, giving you the perfect excuse to stroll around and explore Toronto’s outdoor art scene.

I always find that these pieces offer such a different vibe when experienced in the quiet, cool mornings, away from the festival crowds. It’s a great way to enjoy the city’s art while getting some fresh air.

3. The McMichael Canadian Art Collection: “Conversations” (Ongoing)

For a slower-paced and reflective day, I love heading out to the McMichael. It’s just outside Toronto and provides a serene escape, both with its art and its natural surroundings.

Their ongoing Conversations exhibition highlights the interplay between Indigenous and Canadian artists, inviting us to rethink our relationship with land, culture, and identity. It’s a great spot to recharge while still being immersed in art—perfect for a Saturday drive when you’re looking to get out of the city.

4. DesignTO Festival (January 19-28, 2024)

Various Locations

If you’re into design as much as you are art, then DesignTO is a must-see. This annual festival brings the city to life with over 100 exhibits and installations in public spaces, galleries, and shops. One of the reasons I love this festival is how it blurs the line between art and function—you’ll find everything from innovative furniture to thought-provoking art installations. Walking around Toronto during DesignTO is always such a treat, especially when it feels like the whole city is part of the creative process.

5. Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO): “Cassatt – McNicoll: Impressionists Between Worlds” (Opens November 18, 2024)

317 Dundas St W

The AGO never disappoints, and one of their art events of the season, the upcoming exhibition featuring Mary Cassatt and Helen McNicoll is no exception. These two female Impressionists captured everyday life in such a beautifully light-filled way. I’m especially excited about this exhibit because it brings together works that have rarely been seen in Canada. If you love Impressionism as much as I do, this is one art event in Toronto you won’t want to miss. Plus, it opens just in time for those cozy winter gallery visits.

6. Blue Crow Gallery: “Inaugural Exhibition” (November 16, 2024)

1610 Gerrard St E

I’m especially excited for the Inaugural Exhibition of the Blue Crow Gallery this November. On a casual Sunday, I met Erika, one of the team at the gallery, when I stumbled upon Morgan James’s mixed media work, “Party Crashers,” a piece that perfectly captures the soul of Toronto with its playful raccoon elements. The gallery’s focus on showcasing emerging and mid-career artists is refreshing, and I could feel the excitement as Erika spoke about their vision for the inaugural show.

Out of all the art events, this exhibition will be a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy great art, and meet the artists. You’ll have the chance to hear their stories and inspirations while enjoying a lovely spread of wine and cheese. It’s the kind of intimate event that reminds me why I love being involved in Toronto’s art scene so much.

7. Winter Stations 2024 (February – March 2024)

The Beaches, Toronto

Even in the cold months, art events in Toronto doesn’t slow down. Winter Stations is one of my favourite ways to experience art in the great outdoors. Here are the two places and specific shows happening this year. YZD location opens on September 19th and Nimbus, Kaleidoscopic Odyssey, Making Waves, We Caught a UFO are available for a visit right now.

This annual competition transforms the lifeguard stations along The Beaches into stunning works of art, with each design making use of the winter landscape in creative and unexpected ways. It’s the perfect excuse to bundle up, head to the lake, and appreciate how art can thrive even in the most unexpected places (and weather!).

8. Toronto Biennial of Art (March 2024)

Various Locations

Another huge event coming up in the new year is the Toronto Biennial of Art. This city-wide event is always packed with boundary-pushing contemporary works that engage with Toronto’s unique cultural and geographic landscape and hard-to-choose-from art events. The Biennial has a strong focus on social and environmental themes, so if you’re looking for art that makes you think, this is the event to mark on your calendar. I’m always impressed by how this event transforms the city into a hub for critical conversations around art and society.

Hope to see some friends at these art events!

With so many incredible art events in Toronto coming up, there’s no shortage of opportunities to get inspired. Whether you’re a collector, a casual gallery-goer, or just looking for something new to do on a Saturday, these events are sure to offer something that will catch your eye (and maybe your heart!). So, grab your coat, mark your calendar, get your coffee from your favourite cafe and let’s appreciate Toronto’s art scene together this winter.
